People want strong leadership in times of crisis. Time and time again, it is shown that people are quite happy to give up control or freedom for safety.

What they don’t want is people looking out of their depth or indecisive, or even too collaborative.

When the ship is in a storm, you don’t want the captain and first officer looking at each other blankly, arguing over direction, or explaining orders to the masses.

You want the captain at the helm, the first officer backing him up and the crew jumping at orders. The explanations can wait until calmer times.
