    Outside of the tobacco industry and their cheer squad I really don’t understand opposition to those plain packaging laws. If they work, great, we’ve reduced smoking. If they don’t then so what. It’s not like they cost us anything really and one thing they definitely won’t do is increase smoking levels.

    If you look at the ABS figures, cigarette consumption did increase through the year 2013, but then fell off a cliff in the March quarter for 2014.

    But, lets be honest. It was the 12.5% price rise in excise that came into effect on 1st Dec 2013 that has resulted in the drop, not the plain packaging.

    Aesthetics are nice, but it’s the price that has the greatest impact.
